Sibiu Travel Guide

A medieval Saxon town on the Cibin river, Sibiu keeps a grand Piața Mare, an Upper Town above a Lower Town linked by stairs, and the Făgăraș mountains close behind. This independent guide compares tours and plans day trips.

Sibiu Neighbourhoods At A Glance

Sibiu divides naturally into a few districts. The Upper Town sits on a ridge around Piața Mare and Piața Huet, where the Lutheran cathedral, the Brukenthal Palace and the old fortifications cluster together. Below the walls, the Lower Town stretches down to the Cibin, its narrow lanes and small squares once home to craftsmen and traders. Dumbrava, a broad forest southwest of the centre, holds the ASTRA open air museum and the zoo. Turnișor lies near the train station to the west, while Terezian spreads east of the centre. Because the main sights concentrate in the Upper Town, most visitors base themselves there and cover the city on foot.
